Toxicity: Toxic;

Mode of action: Spirolides are fast acting toxins isolated from the dinoflagellates Alexnadrium ostenfeldii or Alaxandrium peruvianum targeting muscarinic, acetylcholine and nicotinic receptors ^1,2 transmembrane calcium channels ³. Recent research ^4,5 has shown that at sub-toxic concentrations, this molecule can cross the blood-brain barrier and reduce the main pathological characteristics of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in a well-known animal model system.
